Improving the science and practice of adapting to adversity and ever-changing environments.
I am a clinical psychologist and adaptation scientist dedicated to understanding and promoting adaptation, recovery, and performance in the face of adversity, disruption, and change. My work seeks to understand the processes that drive adaptation and recovery and translate that knowledge into practical and effective solutions for individuals, teams, communities, and organizations.
The Science of Adapting
My work seeks to understand, identify, and promote adaptation following trauma, adversity, and other significant life challenges. Adaptation is a highly complex and dynamic process that emerges through ongoing interactions between individuals and their environments. Although adversity is common, people respond to it in remarkably different ways: some recover quickly, others experience persistent distress, and many follow pathways somewhere in between.
Understand
How do people adapt following adversity, disruption, and major life challenges?
I study how adaptation and recovery unfold over time, and why people can respond so differently to similar challenges. Rather than a fixed trait, adaptation is an ongoing, context-dependent process.
Identify
Who is most likely to adapt, who is most at risk for persistent difficulties, and how can we identify them early?
I examine the individual, social, environmental, and contextual factors that shape these different outcomes, so that support can reach those who need it sooner.
Promote
How can we better support adaptation and recovery in individuals, teams, communities, and organizations?
I develop, evaluate, and implement strategies with stakeholders, through intervention research, program evaluation, and consultation, so that they are practical, relevant, and sustainable.
